MAPULA EMBROIDERED HOMEWARE AND BAGS
With needle and thread stories have been told by the women of the Mapula embroidery project for over 26 years. Artists in the project draw the images while others translate them into brightly embroidered wall hangings, cushion covers, placemats and bags.
Their work has been exhibited in South Africa, all over the USA and Europe, and are in many public and private collections. Mapula embroideries and artists in the project feature in more than 12 art publications and they have won several awards.
The meaning of MAPULA is ‘Mother of rain’. The income generated through the Mapula embroidery project has assisted the women over the years to clothe, feed and educate their children.
